Cape Town

Our original plan was to drive from the Bonamanzi Game Park back to Johannesburg and fly from there to Sao Paulo, Brazil. However, the cost of the Brazilian visas and the difficulties in getting them over the Christmas holidays made us rethink our route. We decided to change our flight and leave from Cape Town and fly to Buenos Aires. Dean and I both wanted to see Cape Town, so it seemed like a good alternative. We arranged to keep our rental car and drop it in Cape Town. It was a 3 day drive from Bonamanzi to Cape Town, but it was a very nice drive.

A good portion of the highway was along the coast. This is a photo from our hotel window in Wilderness.

We arrived in Cape Town and we were thrilled with the backpackers hostel there. It came complete with pool and relatively nice rooms.

The main hang-out area was the cafe, where we too spent a good deal of our time.

We decided to take a bus tour of the city. This is a photo of a church with Table Mountain in the background.

In the lower part of the photo you can see the cars lined up to go up the cable car. We ended up in the line-up with the rest of the cars, but it went reasonably quickly. Once we arrived at the cable car, we decided to pass as there was a huge line-up and we didn't think Dean would be able to go on it anyway.

Instead we took some photos from the road looking down over the city.

Kelly seemed happy enough to sit on the top of the bus being a tourist. We all ended up getting sun burned by the end of the day. Something we just didn't think about at the time.

The beaches along the coast were beautiful, but they were quite crowded at this time of year.

Campbell enjoyed strolling around the V&A Waterfront. Here he watched a coast guard boat being launched into the harbour.

We visited the aquarium at the waterfront. Although the penguins were fun to watch, the smell was a bit overwhelming.

This crab would have made one heck of a meal!

We really enjoyed our visit to Cape Town and we were glad we had made the effort to go. From there, we headed of to Buenos Aires.
