The bus from hell
We took the VIP bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng. Our thought was that it was a 6 hour trip and we really needed air conditioning on the bus. Well, we should have known there may be a problem when they handed out barf bags as we got on the bus. Oh my God, what a trip. Kelly was the first on the bus to loose her breakfast, then someone else and Campbell was a close third. Within the first couple of hours of the bus ride, at least a third of the bus was making use of their free bags. It was the most twisty road I have ever been on. It was one 180 after the other. Poor Cambpell was miserable for the majority of the trip. Within half an hour of getting through the curves (5 hours into the trip), the bus actually stopped for lunch. Oh yeah, it was included in the price of the bus ticket being a VIP bus and all. There wasn't a whole lot of eating being done by anyone. Then to top it all off, we were within 20 kms of Vang Vieng when we blew a tire. So off to the side while we waited for the tire to be changed.
Thankfully, there were a few people on the bus that we had met on the slow boat, so we had a good chat while we waited on the side of the road. We have never been so glad to get somewhere in our lives. The bus dropped us in Vang Vieng, we took a tuk-tuk to the guesthouse and crashed for the rest of the afternoon. Our 6 hour trip took 7 and a half hours and we covered a grand total of 175 kms.!!!
